A bit about Sheringham and its environs

Described as “Norfolk’s Premier Seaside Town”, there can be few better places you could base yourself for exploring this lovely stretch of Coastline. Sheringham boasts an award winning sandy beach which stretches for 100s of yards along the promenade ensuring there is no lack of space even in the most busy summer periods.

For a map of the location please click here.

The beach has a lifeguard patrolled section for added assurance. There are golden sands topped with cobbles for the last thirty or so yards to the promenade so that even on the highest tides, there is still room to relax. The beach and bathing is ideal for children as the incline along the sand is very small ensuring that they can not easily get out of their depth.

Sheringham is also a thriving little town with the main high street proving all your holiday needs and a special market every Saturday. It is also one of the few local towns that still has it’s own small fishing fleet which you will be able to see in action (if you’re up early enough). Daily catches can be bought from the local quayside including the famous Cromer crabs.

Sheringham has many of its own attractions including a fantastic little theatre showing plays and films – I can personally highly recommend this; a steam railway which winds its way picturesquely through the countryside from Sheringham to Holt (about 8 miles); a links golf course and an indoor tropical pool and leisure centre on the edge of town. Just on the outskirts is Priory Maze whose lovely grounds you can (literally) lose yourself in. Then just a mile away is the beautiful Sheringham Park (National Trust) with acres of woods and parkland for exploring.

Also recommended and all within a short drive are : The Shire Horse Centre which as well as the horses, has various other animals and an adventure playground; Cromer the largest town on this part of the coast with its pier including the famous “end of the pier show”. Aylsham, a beautiful Georgian town, particularly worth a visit on Mondays when they have a large selection of different auctions from which you can buy practically anything. Felbrigg Hall (National Trust) with its lovely grounds, beautiful house and, particularly recommended, walled garden. Holt, another lovely Georgian town – which may be visited by taking the steam train. Cley with its windmill and famous pottery. Overstrand with its lovely hotel overlooking the sea, famous for its visits by Churchill. Blakeney with its lovely quayside and walks, famous for its birdwatching and boat trips to see the seals on the sandbanks.

Also recommended but slightly further afield are Blickling Hall (National Trust), Holkham Hall, Castle Acre, Wells Next the Sea, Brancaster (whose beach was recently awarded the accolade of second finest in the UK) and many more (please see our information book available when you arrive for your holiday).
